Sapphirine

Sapphirine is a very rare stone that is named after its sapphire-like color. The stone occurs in several tones, shades and in some cases also in yellow, light red, pink/purple and transparent, but these are not commonly found on the market. It is a harder stone that is at a level of 7.5 on the Mohs scale which makes it more durable and firm.

Sapphirine is highly sought after by both stone collectors and researchers as it is so rare and has only been found in small quantities. It has several localities and was first discovered in 1890 by K.L. Giesecke in Greenland. Although it was first found there, it is very rare in Greenland and instead has larger localities in Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
