Lightning Struck

Lightning-struck quartz, lightning stones or lightning-struck quartz are all the same crystal but with different names. The name comes from the fact that the crystal has been struck by lightning and has a pattern in the form of etchings on the surface. The pattern can also be found inside the crystal.

In the Sierra de Espinhaco mountains in Brazil, there are frequent thunderstorms where the lightning from the storms travels through the earth to an underlying quartz deposit. When the lightning reaches the quartz deposit, high pressure is created and the quartz is quickly heated up and then cooled down by the earth again. The pattern that is visible on the crystals is created in connection with the cooling process.
